Discover El Chivo Birrieria & Taqueria

If you’re driving through Crest Hill and craving slow-cooked Mexican comfort food, El Chivo Birrieria & Taqueria at 2001 Broadway St, Crest Hill, IL 60403, United States is the kind of place that pulls you in with the aroma alone. I’ve stopped by more than once-initially out of curiosity, and later with intention-because the birria here has developed a local following that’s hard to ignore. After multiple visits and conversations with staff and regulars, it’s clear this isn’t just another taco spot; it’s a focused kitchen built around tradition, technique, and flavor.

The heart of the menu is birria, a traditional Mexican stew typically made with goat or beef, slow-braised in a rich blend of dried chilies, spices, and aromatics. According to culinary research from organizations like the National Restaurant Association, consumers continue to seek authentic global flavors and slow-cooked preparations, and birria has surged in popularity across the United States over the last few years. At this taqueria, the process is simple but precise. The meat is marinated, simmered for hours, then shredded and tucked into tacos that are dipped in consommé before hitting the griddle. The result is crispy edges on the outside and tender, juicy meat inside.

On my first visit, I ordered the quesabirria tacos with a side of consommé. The tortillas were lightly crisped, the cheese melted into the meat, and the broth-deep red and fragrant-had layers of flavor from guajillo and ancho chilies. You can taste the time in it. One of the cooks explained that they prepare the broth in large batches daily, adjusting seasoning as it reduces. That attention to detail shows. It’s not greasy or overpowering; instead, it’s balanced, with a gentle heat that builds gradually.

Beyond birria, the menu features classic tacos, burritos, tortas, and combination plates. Carne asada and al pastor are solid options, but the birria ramen-an inventive twist that combines Mexican stew with Japanese noodles-stands out. It’s a real example of culinary crossover done right. Food trends often fade quickly, yet this dish feels purposeful rather than gimmicky. The broth soaks into the noodles, creating a hearty, comforting bowl that works especially well in colder Illinois months.

From a practical standpoint, the location on Broadway Street makes it easy to access whether you’re local to Crest Hill or passing through nearby Joliet. The dining space is casual and straightforward, the kind of diner-style setup where the focus stays on the food. During peak hours, especially weekends, there can be a short wait. Based on my visits, service moves efficiently even when the line grows. Orders are taken at the counter, and food is brought out promptly.

Online reviews echo what I experienced firsthand. Many customers specifically mention the tenderness of the meat and the depth of the consommé. While taste is subjective, consistency is measurable. Across multiple visits spaced months apart, the flavor profile remained steady, which speaks to solid kitchen management and standardized preparation methods. That reliability builds trust. Of course, like any busy taqueria, seating can be limited during rush hours, so planning ahead helps.

Food safety and freshness also matter. The staff appears attentive to cleanliness, and ingredients like cilantro, onions, and lime are served fresh and vibrant. According to public health guidelines from agencies such as the FDA, proper temperature control and handling are critical for slow-cooked meats, and the texture and flavor here suggest careful adherence to those standards. While diners can’t see every back-of-house process, the results indicate professionalism.

In a region filled with Mexican restaurants and taco joints, standing out requires more than trendy dishes. It requires skill, patience, and respect for tradition. This spot delivers on those fronts with confidence. Whether you’re exploring new flavors or simply want a satisfying plate of tacos and a rich bowl of broth, the experience here feels grounded, authentic, and consistently worth the trip.

  • This place is not necessarily about atmosphere, although it is spotlessly clean. It's all about good food. The shrimp soup is mouthwatering, and the serving is generous. Primarily, they are about birria. My lunch partner inhaled his birria soup. The food is good for the soul. How can you ask for more?

  • My dad took us out for breakfast despite us being 3 hours late ⏰ I’m sorry Pa I love you It was Gerald and I first experience at El Chivo Birrieria & Taqueria at the Cresthill Illinois location. We were able to easily find a table and the waitress was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful making sure we always had what we needed during our stay. I ordered a large refreshing not so sugary horchata as my beverage. My meal was scrumptious Caldo con Camarón with a side of onion jalapeños y cilantro y lime ???? with 2 peppers con tostadas. Delicious! I really appreciate the fact that the shrimp was deveined. Brought me back to helping Gaby with her babies birthday party. Good times I notice the details in the work the chefs create. Pa enjoyed his Birria tacos with his Victoria and Ma had her chile relleno with her coffee. Gerald had Juevos Rancheros drenched in their salsa was devine. Overall the experience was fast homey supporting a local restaurant business who also do catering. While we were waiting for our food, we noticed they were still busy with their take out and pick up orders. The food was good and highly recommend it if your looking for a quiet spot to enjoy a good Mexican meal. This is a great spot. You can always have the option to ask to raise their spice level on their dishes as well.

  • This is a small, no frills family owned Mexican restaurant with a few tables, good variety of tacos, birria and a few other Mexican dishes. They also have plenty of on-site parking for your convenience. The service is phenomenal and they definitely take pride in everything they do, their efforts to make you feel like you're at home, definitely show. They always start you off with a complementary basket of chips and salsa. I tried a few tacos, lengua, chile relleno and carné asada. They were all very fresh and delicious. I'm definitely coming back to try the birria.

  • i went here for birria and i got birria. chicago is an hour away from me, which is where i usually go for goat birria. but this place is 20 minutes from me! i’m definitely going to go back again. i’m happy to have found a close spot that both had what i want & was delicious. birria is my favorite food & i was really craving it today for my bday! so when it was good enough to satisfy my craving that’s how you know it was good for real. i’m happy to have tried a new place for my bday lol the guy working there was really sweet too!!! he knew everything we needed before i was even able to ask LOL! i thought that was funny, but super cool. i think because it shows he was observant, wanting to make sure the food was good, and that we were having a nice time! the place wasn’t super fancy or anything, but it WAS super clean. but i don’t really care if it’s a fancy place, i’m there for the food. and the food was soooooo goooooood.
